An Introduction to Contour Lines and Profiles Lesson
MidnightStar has uploaded an introductory lesson on TpT that teaches the rules on drawing and labeling contour lines as well as creating topographic map profiles. This progressive lesson, using the I Do, We Do, You Do method, guides students from completing the most basic topographic maps to more and more complex topographic maps using the “Rules for drawing and interpreting contour lines”.
The “I Do, We Do, You Do” method is an effective instructional strategy for teaching contour line drawing because it gradually builds student independence while providing structured support throughout the learning process.
-
Modeling (I Do)
In the initial phase, the instructor demonstrates how to draw contour lines. This involves verbalizing thought processes, demonstrating techniques, and explaining key concepts such as using spot elevations and benchmarks, the locations of rivers, and the shape of nearby lakes, oceans or adjacent contour lines to accurately place contour lines. By seeing the instructor’s thought process, students can grasp the foundational skills needed for contour drawing. This direct modeling creates a clear example for students to follow and helps demystify topographic maps.
-
Guided Practice (We Do)
Next, the instructor engages students in guided practice. This collaborative phase encourages students to attempt contour drawing with the instructor’s support. The teacher facilitates this by providing feedback, clarifying misunderstandings, and encouraging students to work ahead of the instructor. This shared experience allows students to learn from each other while still benefiting from the instructor’s expertise. The interaction helps students build confidence as they practice the techniques together.
-
Independent Practice (You Do)
Finally, students move to independent practice, where they apply what they’ve learned to complete their own topographic maps. This phase is crucial as it encourages self-reliance and critical thinking. Students are now equipped with the skills and understanding gained from the previous phases and can problem solve on their own. The instructor can monitor progress, offering feedback as needed, which reinforces learning and fosters a growth mindset.
This lesson: “An Introduction to Contour Lines and Profiles Lesson” has been “tweaked” many times and successfully used for many years in the classroom; it is “tried and true”. It includes seven I Do/We Do topographic maps, three You Do topographic maps, Direct Instruction PowerPoint slides on the rules of drawing and labeling contour lines and profiles, as well as PowerPoint We Do slides for guided practice. In addition, there are multiple Reinforcement and Review Worksheets with answer keys included in this lesson. By structuring the lesson in this three-phase approach, the “I Do, We Do, You Do” method ensures that students not only learn the technical skills required for contour drawing but also develop confidence to complete this work on their own. This scaffolded approach allows for differentiation, catering to various skill levels and learning paces. Ultimately, this method transforms the learning experience from mere imitation to genuine understanding, enabling students to appreciate and master the art of contour drawing effectively.
If you have been looking to improve your students’ understanding of the complex topic of topographic maps, this is the lesson for you! MidnightStar is confident that you and your students will benefit from this highly effective lesson!
